Mammoth is basically Wolfgang Van Halen’s solo project — yeah, that Van Halen. But if you’re expecting tapping solos and ‘80s hair, think again. Wolfgang is doing his own thing. He plays pretty much all the instruments himself, and honestly, it’s impressive.
“The name Mammoth is really special to me.” says Wolf. “Not only was it the name of Van Halen before it became Van Halen, but my father was also the lead singer. Ever since my dad told me this, I always thought that when I grew up, I’d call my own band Mammoth, because I loved the name so much. I’m so thankful that my father was able to listen to, and enjoy the music I made. Nothing made me happier than seeing how proud he was that I was continuing the family legacy.”
“The End” features big chunky guitars, drums that sound like thunder, and vocals that are raw but melodic. Lyrically, it’s about finishing something, leaving it behind, maybe feeling a bit wrecked, but knowing it’s the right call. What’s cool about Mammoth is that Wolfgang could’ve just coasted on the family name, but instead, he built his own sound. It’s kinda Foo Fighters-ish, kinda modern rock radio, but also personal.
“The End” it’s loud, emotional, and catchy, amazingly performed, and accompanied by a fantastic video featuring numerous guests. It was directed by Robert Rodriguez & Greg Nicotero, and you can spot actors and musicians like Danny Trejo, Myles & Selena Kennedy, and Slash.
