The trio Midway Still was formed in the early '90s in Kent, England. The band consisted of drummer Declan Kelly, bassist Jan Konopka, and vocalist/guitarist Paul Thomson. They were signed to the Fire Records subsidiary, Roughneck. Their debut single, "I Won't Try," released in 1991, achieved impressive success, reaching number 12 on New Music Express's year-end chart.
In 1992, they released their first full-length album, Dial Square, which was produced by Don Fleming from Gumball. This was followed by another album, Life's Too Long, produced by Frankie Stubbs from Leatherface, in 1993, along with a couple of additional singles. After this, drummer Kelly left the band and was replaced by Brad Aitchison, who had previously been with Speed Circus. The band subsequently departed from their record label.
They financed the recording of a third album, which unfortunately never saw the light of day. After an extended hiatus that began in 1994, the group made a charming comeback in 2001 (with Russell Lee replacing Konopka) by releasing the single "Fuck You" on Antipop.
Could Have Been is Midway Still's first original material in a decade. I love the pace, the mood, the sound, basically everything. The song features fantastic production, a super-catchy chorus, and some very cool guitar solos as well. Give it a go by clicking on the Spotify player below and follow Midway Still, if you like what you hear.
