Song of the day: Slothrust - Pony (Ginuwine Cover)

There are cover songs, and then there are the numerous ways Leah Wellbaum and Will Gorin have remixed their favourite tunes over the past 15 years. Not only with their long-running band Slothrust. Sarah Lawrence initially became friends over the blues, a way to apply the advanced lesson plans of professors like Mike Longo — a pianist who has played with jazz legends such as Dizzy Gillespie and Lee Konitz — to bold riffs and rhythms that felt like entire rewrites. Gorin gives special credit to Longo's "Three I's" instruction - imitation, incubation, and invention.

This is their new single, Pony (Ginuwine Cover). The band says: “It’s always fun to leave space in the music where improvisation is possible,” explains Wellbaum, “and that is part of what is so exciting to us about the extended version of ‘Pony’; it’s entirely improvised, and we only did one performance of it in the studio.” I love covers with a strong (huge, in this case), personal touch. Also, performance, video and production are absolutely spot on. Give it a go by clicking on the YouTube player below and remember to follow Slothrust on social media.
