I think every musician would love to get old like David Gilmour. He wrote lots of important pages in the history of music, his touch is still there and in his latest album ‘Luck and Strange’, he collaborated with his family. His wife Polly Samson wrote some lyrics and some vocals are from his daughter Romany Gilmour. Oh, and the album is great. What do you want more? Maybe a better cover, but this is not very important, I guess.
The music of ‘Luck and Strange’ is pure class and what you expect from Gilmour, in terms of sound, quality, atmosphere and solos. The songs where his daughter Romany sings with his father are "Between Two Points", released as a single, a cover of the Montgolfier Brothers, and "Yes, I have Ghosts", a beautiful track released a few years ago.
The album is nothing new if you know David Gilmour but I find it very inspired. I loved the three singles, "The Piper's Call", "Between two points" and "Dark and Velvet Nights". Apart from these singles, intros and bonus tracks (an infinite Jam of the title track), there are not many remaining full songs (four) and if you follow these pages, you know I'm a fan of that. A few songs, but good. And this is the case.
Speaking of "good", even if I should say "fantastic", are the solos, the house special. Check, among the others, the one of "A Single Spark" and especially the second half of "Scattered", reminding me of Comfortably Numb. It may sound a little too pretentious from me, but do yourself a favour and listen to it. This is Gilmour at his best and those minutes are definitely one of the highlights of the year.
I've read some pieces of interviews where Gilmour said ‘Luck and Strange’ was his best album in ages. I thought it was the usual thing you always say in interviews when you have a new album coming out but this is not the case. He is damn right. For me, one of the best releases of 2024 and a classy album from a superb musician.
