London band Holding Poison return with their massive new single, “Knew I Couldn’t Have You.” Helmed by veteran producer Chris Sheldon (Foo Fighters, Biffy Clyro, Feeder), the track pairs slick, pop-sensible melodies with crushing guitar riffs, thunderous drums, and masterful quiet-LOUD dynamics. Channeling the absolute best of '90s and 2000s alt-rock grit, the five-piece delivers a hook-heavy, high-voltage anthem built for heavy rotation.
“The song stems from a situation I think a lot of people have probably had at some point,” explains frontman Mathew Blackwell. “You meet someone and it might only be for a few months, but you build a connection and an understanding of each other. Sometimes feelings and timing don't quite line up and eventually you go your separate ways. What I find interesting is how someone can be important to you at a certain point in your life and, as the years pass, eventually become quite a distant memory. The song looks back at that with hindsight, recognising mistakes along the way but also accepting that some things are probably better left in the past.”
“Musically, we wanted the reflective side of the lyrics to sit against something much bigger and more uplifting. The male and female vocals really locked in and helped us achieve what we think is the most melodic track we’ve done to date. Chris Sheldon mixed the track and really helped us balance the more intimate parts with how big we wanted the song to feel.”
I find the song extremely enjoyable from start to finish, amazingly performed and produced. It's energetic and catchy at the same time, with a very dynamic rhythm section and inspired guitar parts.
