Danish-born and NYC-based singer-songwriter Cillë unveils her debut EP , but you can call me silly!—a whimsically self-aware nod to her name, a playful Danish diminutive of Cecilie.
With this release, Cillë deepens her exploration of feeling alien in a familiar world—a theme that’s echoed throughout her work since 2022’s Mom, Am I From Outer Space? Now, she folds in new layers of self-acceptance and “oddball empowerment” through standout tracks like “Neon Trooper” and “Champagne Punk.”
Dreamscapes return as well, a motif she touched on in 2023’s “Half a Heart.” On “All the Haters Are Dead,” she paints a hauntingly serene vision of solitude in a post-apocalyptic world—equal parts cathartic and melancholic.
The EP features 4 songs, offering 15 minutes of music. Every instrument sounds crystal clear and powerful, showcasing top-notch production by Benjamin Hull, who collaborated with Kelsey Warren of Blak Emoji and Joseph Freeman, who handled the mastering.
8-bit start (but the guitars will follow straight after, don't worry) for Neon Trooper, an 80s track with a super catchy chorus, a fantastic guitar solo, and a robust production. The song will make you tap your foot, and it's definitely a great start for the EP. The following track, Reckless Hearts, is something in between old school punk and 80s pop. It's a no-frills song with a couple of killer guitar solos and is fun to listen to.
Champagne Punk represents the title very well. I find the song sophisticated in some aspects and very easy-going and immediate for others. The last track, All the Haters are Dead, has a very pop/melodic start, and the piano arrangement reminds me of something in between Elton John and Queen (listen to the solo!). Another great song for a solid EP, straightforward and thoroughly enjoyable from beginning to end, with everything perfectly aligned—songwriting, production, and performance.
