AM Gold - Bongs Not Bombs (2025)

AM Gold began as a project for Hudson Valley musician Aaron Magram’s quirky rock/prog/pop-inspired home recordings. In late 2022, it evolved into a power duo with drummer Dana Fasano. Their initial goal was to perform the older, layered material live as a two-piece, using pedals to enhance the sound. After nailing their live setup, the band shifted focus to new recordings, starting with the self-titled 2024 release AM Gold and followed by their latest LP, Bongs Not Bombs, just released. Both albums were entirely self-recorded and showcase their love for diverse rock styles from the ’70s onward.

The new album comprises 10 songs for 42 minutes of music. The title track opens the album slowly and in a cinematic way before a heavy doom riff, reminding me of an angry Tony Iommi. It's a very good opener, and I love the acceleration at 3.30. completely different mood for the following Yr Kind, fast paced and light, very enjoyable and catchy, with a classy guitar arrangement, backing vocals and even some prog bits. A long, eclectic, and interesting song, in between a few genres, amazingly written and performed.

Very 90s mood for Noose, with a very tight rhythm section and cool riffs, and very 80s (and almost pop) is How does it feel. (Suckin on) Billy G's Beard is high energy and super catchy at the same time, with robust and classic rock riffs and a beautiful prog instrumental break at 2.40. Probably my favourite on the album, if I have to choose one. Among other songs, I like the funny lyrics of Influencer Influenza ("follow, like and subscribe..."), the "epic" mood of I'm Letting Go, the idea of the "reprise" version of the opener, title track, this time called Bombs not Bongs. Any genre missing? Yes, Punk Rock! Here we are with the final track, Eggs, sounding in between 80s Dave Mustaine and Misfits. The sound is rough (perfect for the genre), and the drumming is spot on.

Bongs Not Bombs is a super eclectic album, amazingly performed, with lots of different atmospheres and genres. The production is great too, very convincing despite the constant "change of scenario". A pleasure to listen to in its entirety, unpredictable, and most importantly, fun.
