DREAM THEATER - Lost Not Forgotten Archives: A Dramatic Tour of Events – Select Board Mixes (2021) Review

Here is another live album by Dream Theater, from the Lost not forgotten archives: A Dramatic Tour of Events – Select Board Mixes, a selection of songs from the tour of the album A dramatic turn of events album, the first without Mike Portnoy, replaced by Mike Mangini.

This release follows Images and words - Live in Japan (click on the link for the review) and luckily, this time the release is, at least for me, way better as James LaBrie is in a way better shape (and a few years younger) as he is not forced to sing only very difficult songs from Images and words, even if the album is present on the tracklist with Under a glass moon, Another day and Learning to live.

Lots of songs from the tracklist are taken from the date in Hyde Park, London. Why do I know that it's Hyde Park? Because I was there and I enjoyed the show from the second row, on a beautiful summer day. Here is my reaction video to Forsaken, a song that I love from a very underrated album like Systematic Chaos.

If you ask me about what was the highlight of that concert I would say that it was for sure the amazing performance of The count of Tuscany, which is present as well on the tracklist, luckily. It will never be like listening to it live (the atmosphere and the live presence of John Petrucci on that song is something you can't reproduce, unluckily) but it's better than nothing, right?

I am very satisfied with this live album. Publishing a selection of songs rather than an entire concert is always a winning solution as you can pick up the best performance for the song in question.

Of the tracklist, I would have probably skipped the almost 7 minutes long Drum solo (but Mangini was the new member of the band for the tour, so I understand the choice) and The great debate from Six degrees of inner turbulence as I never really liked the song much, but this is just a personal preference.

There is luckily space for my favourite album of the band, Scenes from a memory, here represented by Through My Words (a magnificent performance by Jordan Rudess, here) and Fatal Tragedy. Another song that I love is Peruvian skies from Falling into infinity, again taken from London. As I am is the last song on this live album, that I recommend for sure to all the Dream Theater fans as well as people who want to approach the band for the first time.
