Charlie Benante - Silver Linings (2021) Review

During the lockdown, we've seen a trend: musicians jamming each other remotely with old tunes or covers. The following trend is releasing all those jams in an album, here is the case of Charlie Benante, mainly known for being the drummer for Anthrax

The list of guests for this Silver linings is rich. Shall I give you the names? Ok, get ready, the list is long: Charlie Benante (obviously), his friend Frank Bello, then Mark Osegueda, Mark Menghi, Carla Harvey, Ra Diaz, Darryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels, Rob Caggiano, Jennifer Cella, Randy McStine, Alex Skolnick, Snake Sabo, Jon Donias, Jordan Rudess, PJ Farley, Joe McGinness, John 5, Hank Von Hell, Dave Brownsound, Jason “Cone” McCaslin, Corey Glover and Henry Flury. The details of the songs are at the bottom of the page.

This is a super various tracklist where all the guests show their versatility. We have pop-rock stuff like the opener City of Blinding Lights by U2 - Is it Bono singing?!?), pre-grunge era with Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns by Mother Love Bone, Massive Attack, Rap with a DMC Medley, old ones like Fleetwood Mac, Heavy metal with the cover of Transylvania by Iron Maiden (from their debut, click on the video), Prog with the song Presto vivace, 2 non-superfamous songs by Kiss (again, are they cover version? The sound is exactly like the originals). We even have new stuff like Bad Guy by Billie Eilish, can you believe it?.

Almost all the covers in this Silver Linings sound to me like non-covers, as they sound like the original piece. If it is good or bad I let you decide, but for sure it shows the infinite quality of Charlie Benante (who is used to playing very different music) and all his guests. I enjoyed listening to this cover album, good job Charlie. Give it a go.
