Interview: Brian Dalton

singer songwriter

Bio
What’s up! Thank you for having me. My name is Brian Dalton and I'm a singer/artist out of Missouri, USA. I’ve been involved in music for 20 years in various bands/projects but it wasn’t until about 7 or 8 years ago that I really decided to go for a solo career. Since then, I’ve been lucky enough to write and record various singles reaching listeners all over the world.

Line up
I’m a solo artist but I will have musicians for live shows on tour.

We sound like
I would say my sound is a blend between rock, pop and synth. Lately it’s more synth-laden with a rock undertone.

Influences
My influences range from metal bands such as Architects to synth bands like GUNSHIP and anywhere in between.

What do you write about?
Mostly I’ve written about overcoming adversity as it’s something I’m extremely passionate about. I feel that anyone can overcome almost any situation if they just believe they can, try their hardest and don’t give up. And a lot of times all it takes is someone believing in them for them to believe in themself. I want anyone who’s struggling to know that they’re not alone and that I do believe in them.

Your favourite live performance so far
My favorite live performance so far has to be performing in Greece for Danny and Peppy of Music Borders Radio. It was very emotional and almost healing in a way and I will cherish both it and them forever.

Tell us a funny story that happened in studio or on stage
When I was out at my producer Jake Bond’s place in North Carolina recording last September I decided to record a video montage of some of the dancing and air fighting that I do behind his back in between takes. I thought it was the greatest thing ever. He was slightly less amused.

Your favourite records
My favorite records tend to vary depending on my mood but overall I’d say Metallica’s “And Justice For All” which really got me into pursuing rock. Staind’s “Break The Cycle” album which I listened to all the way through several hundred times growing up. And lately, The Midnight’s “Nocturnal” album for changing my perspective on synth music. Absolutely mind-blowing.

A musician you would like to meet for a beer
James Hetfield. He definitely influenced my approach to singing and he seems like he would still be really down-to-earth even after all of Metallica's success.

What will you ask backstage if you were the most important band on earth?
I don’t know that I would accept that I’m more important than any other band or person for that matter. But to get backstage, I would just ask that whoever came back there wasn’t crazy and preferably that they actually wanted to be there.
