Interview - ARSON WHALES

Arson Whales is an Indie rock band from Northern California. Their new single is called Scene four.

- Hi guys and welcome to this interview. Tell us about your latest release Scene four.
Scene Four is kind of a rhythmic sonic journey through this darkly lit world, lyrically painting a shadowy portrait of a girl losing herself to her own darkness. In the video we made you see her falling into that world with some pretty shifty characters. We had fun making it.

- How would you describe your sound?
Great question, I guess it's really based on our singer who is obsessed with interesting music that you can still dance to, so we try and accommodate that as much as possible. We try to pull from our many influences to create something that’s really our own.

- What do you write about?
Dinosaurs comes up a lot, not sure why, but we believe we're magnets for the abstract electrons whirling about us at any given time and go with whatever the universe wants us to convey.

- What do you listen to when you are home?
If you ask each one of us, you'd get a completely different answer we're all into very different scenes and I think that's what's happening for Arson Whales, we're all from totally different planets which I love, it keeps it fresh.

- Your favorite live performance so far?
Well, it's definitely the one coming up in a couple weeks since it will be our first live performance since forming Arson Whales and probably our only show for the rest of 2021. Everything we had planned thus far had been canceled, but we’ve been keeping ourselves very busy working on new material. We’re currently booking shows for next year and are very much looking forward to getting out and playing live!

- Tell us a funny story that happened in studio or on stage
Well, at our last rehearsal, our bassist Brad told us when he was a kid and his family had just moved to Napa, a neighbor kid asked if he wanted to go with him and see “The Pile”! It turned out to be a 3ft high pile of potato bug legs. So surreal...What he didn't know at the time was that it was from an owl that had been discarding them in this old creepy barn for years. He mentioned it after he rescued a live one that was crawling past him while we were playing. It's our spirit animal now!
He tells us a story of that caliber just about every time we get together... it's mind blowing. Just when you think you know someone. And who knew owls don’t like the legs? That’s a moment in the life of Arson Whales. We always have fun rehearsing or recording. We really enjoy each other’s company, it's something really special, so we’re grateful for that!

- A musician you would like to meet for a beer?
David Bowie (but maybe for tea :)

- What would you ask for backstage if you were the most important band on earth?
Interesting question...hmmm..well if we were the most “important” band on earth?..maybe a shaman, spirit guide, Dalai lama, I don't know...some enlightened being to keep us in check! Reminding us to keep it real and not waste a moment on bullshit.

- What are your plans for the future?
We’re currently recording tracks that are going to be for an EP that looks to be out early next year. During the last year we’ve been writing a lot and have a lot of demos, easily enough material for an album, but we’re thinking we’d possibly like to find a producer to work with for our first full album, so we’re looking into that and booking some dates for next summer.
