Interview - Subsurfer

Subsurfer is a 4 piece band that hails from Southern California. They've been described as if Kurt Cobain surfed. Let's have a chat with them about their music.

- How would you describe your sound?
We describe it as Grit Pop. Indie Pop songs with a Grunge sensibility.

- What do you write about?
Plight of the common man.

- What do you listen to when you are home?
Spotify playlist is loaded with Melodic heavy rock and Indie.

- Your favourite live performance so far?
2 performances both on tour in Oregon. One at Eugene where it was packed night and people lined up for autographs, and the next night outside of Portland in front on 2 people. They hung around for the entire set and gave us a $20 tip, so they must have liked us!

- Tell us a funny story that happened in studio or on stage
I started one of our new songs, in front of 400 people, in the entire wrong key. Only realized after the first chorus - I hoped people thought it was just a jazz fusion version. I made the lead singer have a mental breakdown, he didn’t know how to deal with the chord change.

- Your favourite albums?
HIM - Dark Light. Nirvana - In Utero and a new self-titled album from a band called Dummy.

- A musician you would like to meet for a beer?
Alive: Dave Grohl and I actually met Kurt Cobain.

- What would you ask backstage if you were the most important band on earth?
Yoga class just before the set. Calms me down since drugs are no longer in fashion.
Giovanni Gagliano

Passionate about music I wrote my first article for "Given To Rock" in 2012, reaching now 30K global followers. I am also a musician, gigging around London.
