Interview - Hail

Hail is a symphonic metal singer/songwriter from Southampton, UK, who has just released her 5th single. Let's chat with her about this new song and music in general.

- Welcome to this interview. Tell us about your latest release Here She Lies.
Hello! Here She Lies is the 5th song that I've released. I recorded it in early 2020 at River Studios with producer Matt Parisi. The song follows a story of loss and grief.

- How would you describe your sound?
I think it fits best in the symphonic metal genre at the moment. If I had to pick a band that my music was similar to, it'd be Evanescence.

- What do you write about?
I tend to write emotional songs about loss and grief. Whilst the stories in the songs may be made up, the emotion behind them isn't.

- What do you listen to when you are home?
Honestly, a bit of everything! But the bands I have on repeat are: Queens of the Stone Age, Radiohead, Halestorm and System of a Down.

- Your favourite live performance so far?
I've done a few local gigs in Southampton and I've quite enjoyed the local festivals because it's always ended up being a nice sunny day where I can meet some other artists, check out the other events going on and make a bit of a day of it!

- Tell us a funny story that happened in studio or on stage.
I once fell off the front of a stage with a great thump in front of quite a few people, so I have since decided against wearing heels...

- Your favourite albums?
I have two all time favourite albums: In Rainbows by Radiohead and Like Clockwork by Queens of the Stone Age. In fact, Like Clockwork inspired my first song - Got the Faith - but I realised that whilst I love the band and the album, that sound isn't quite right for me as an artist.

- A musician you would like to meet for a beer?
Dave Grohl. I can just imagine him being funny, down to earth and having interesting stories to tell.

- What would you ask for backstage, if you were the most important band on earth?
I'm not sure exactly what, but it would be snacks.

- What are your plans for the near future?
I have started to write and record some new songs - still in the symphonic metal genre - that I hope to release soon. I also hope to get some gigs underway!
