Interview - Kargyr

Kargyr he's been a prog metal fan/composer for 10 years and now it's proud to present us the first ever prog metal record made between 6 mattresses in a little french garage!

- Welcome to this interview. Tell us about your latest release Chronophobic.
Hello, thanks for having me! Well, Chronophobic is my first single release as a solo artist, after 10 years as a metal instrumentalist (Drummer, Guitarist and eventually vocalist). Chronophobic aims at giving you as much contrast & emotions as possible by alternating ethereal, prog passages with screaming vocals and headbanging breakdowns!

- How would you describe your sound?
Djent, Prog & Tribal! I have been strongly influenced by bands like Meshuggah, Gojira, Tool & Opeth who really shaped my ear as it is today! So Kargyr is mostly about heavily distorted, palm-muted guitars overlayed by discordant harmonies and howling vocals. The main vocal feature is the use of the Kargyra technique, to produce powerful low vocals typically used in ancient eastern cultures.

- What do you write about?

The topics vary strongly from one track to the Other! Chronophobic is as suggested the feat and anxiety due to Time passing by (too Quick!) while The Abyss is all about the earth destroying itself to preserve its wild authenticity.

- What do you listen to when you are home?
Well, metally speaking I'm very much into Mastodon, Periphery and Code Orange these days! I'm getting my ears around hardcore :) I also enjoy classics such as Queen, Abba, Dire Straits too!

- Your favourite live performance so far?
I was astonished by the live performance of Djent Lords Meshuggah at le Transbordeur in Lyon! I had never seen such a consistent, brain hacking live show! The lights & sound synchro was just not from this earth ^^

- Tell us a funny story that happened in studio or on stage.
I remember, once while recording screaming vocals for The Abyss (while remotely working...) I accidentally picked up an incoming call for a professional meeting! Suffice to say that my co-workers were surprised by my voice haha

- Your favourite albums?
Not an easy question! My top five albums would definitely include:
- From Mars to Sirius by Gojira
- Destroy Erase Improve by Meshuggah
- Roots by Sepultura
- Coal by Leprous
- Lateralus by Tool

- A musician you would like to meet for a beer?
As many people I'm sure, I would definitely love to spend some hours with the all mighty Dime Bagdarrel (Pantera / Damage Plan guitarist) I'm sure he would have some funny touring stories to tell lol

- What would you ask for backstage, if you were the most important band on earth?
Backstage madness! Well in order to be relaxed for the show, I think a personal masseur should do the trick!

- What are your plans for the near future?
Well, first of all I'm running a fundraiser right now, and I spend some weeks designing the merch people can get by supporting it (stickers, tee-shirt). As other counterparts I writing a new song, heavily influenced by the 2021 Dune movie sound atmosphere! You can get it before everybody else by supporting the fundraiser. The last thing you can get is your personalized lullaby, rearranged on a Kargyr fashion (to get your kids to sleep...or to headbang!) You can support it at www.kargyr…nir-kargyr
