Interview - The BRKN

The Denver-based band is Jacob Cade [vocals, guitar], Mike Bokenkamp [drums], and MJ Younkers [guitar].  “We’re heading to Europe for the first time ever. Big thanks to The Dangerous Summer for giving us a big chance on an opening slot with them. New music is in the works as well as more touring,” says frontman Cade.

Hi and welcome to this interview. Please introduce your band.
We’re a pop band from Denver that all met playing worship music in church. Influenced by The 1975, The Band Camino, Prince, Michael Jackson, Neck Deep, and a little bit of Van Halen we decided to mix all of those sounds and do the best we could to find our own.

Line up:
Jacob Cade (Vocals, Guitar, Synths)
Mike Bokenkamp (Drums)
MJ Younkers (Guitar)

Discography
Come Outside EP released in 2020 and Not The Same (single) and Coffee (single).

How do you sound like?
We have the same vibes as bands like The 1975, The Band Camino, Prince, Nightly and LANY.

What are your influences?
The 1975, The Band Camino, Prince, Michael Jackson, Van Halen, and Neck Deep.

What do you write about?

We write about heartbreak, sadness, confusion, and being angry at your feelings. As well as being in love and how incredible but cruel that can be.

Your favourite live performance so far?
We loved the headline show we played here in Denver at Globe Hall. It’s amazing to play for people that know your song and love your band.

Tell us a funny story that happened in studio or on stage.
We were recording the Come Outside EP, we drank so many La Croix’s that we built a wall of them that covers the entire back wall of the studio! On stage somewhere on tour.

Your favourite records.

I Like It When You Sleep by The 1975/ Peace And The Panic by Neck Deep/ The 1975 Self Titled/ Tryhard by The Band Camino/ 5150 by Van Halen.

A musician you would like to meet for a beer?
Matty Healy.

What will you ask backstage if you were the most important band on earth?
Probably all of our friends and family to be there to party with us along with all of the people who have inspired us that we’ve always wanted to meet.
Giovanni Gagliano

Passionate about music I wrote my first article for "Given To Rock" in 2012, reaching now 30K global followers. I am also a musician, gigging around London.
