BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN "ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE"

By Enrico Spinelli

The Boss is back... um... I mean, not really! This is in fact a new release by the good Bruce Springsteen called "Only the strong survive", but it is an album entirely made up of covers (as clearly indicated on the cover).

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm not a great fan of these operations, despite the fact that in the past Bruce has already dedicated an entire work to Peter Seeger's compositions ("We Shall Overcome", beautiful) and has released a record that contained some songs by other artists ("High Hopes", which probably only I liked), so he's absolutely not new to this kind of releases; this time we are faced with a collection of soul pieces, the ones that the Boss played at the beginning of his career. And the result is good, nothing to say, everything flows well, fun, without boring the listener but without even leaving you shivering, obviously apart from the usual pleasure of hearing Springsteen's voice.

It must be said that works of this kind seem more suitable for artists short of ideas, while Bruce Springsteen has amply demonstrated with the latest releases that it is still in splendid shape, so records of this kind leave only partial pleasure after all... and that "Vol.1" (as well as statements from Bruce himself) suggests that it will not be the only release of its kind. Of course, Bruce at his age and without major economic needs can afford to do what he likes and it's also legitimate, but having said that, I think it's right to expect something else from someone who is great to offer you better.

For lovers of the Boss a safe purchase, for those looking for a handful of minutes of good fun but there's better, for others rather negligible... See you next time Bruce, please with your songs since you can still definitely write good ones.
