Song of the day: A Very Special Episode - $5 Cover

Everyone in the rock trio A Very Special Episode contributes to the songwriting, the music, and the overall production. That produced a distinct sound on FYHOD. But their new album Freak Me Out pushes the boundaries of that recognisable sound. The aim, according to guitarist Patrick Porter, was to "let's take every idea we have to its logical extremes."

This is most evident in the song "$5 Cover," an A/B/A/B ode to the Brooklyn establishment known as the East Williamsburg Econo Lodge (EWEL). Despite having an unusually simple structure, the song is one of the album's highlights thanks to stylistic decisions like gang vocals, acoustic guitar, and background noise.

I love the grunge mood of the song (distorted bass!) and the performance of the band is great: straightforward, punchy and catchy at the same time (check out the chorus), supported by a spot-on production as well. Give it a go by clicking on the YouTube player below (the video is fantastic, reminding me of the "In Bloom" vibes, Nirvana), and also don't forget to follow A Very Special Episode on social media as well.
