MYMO started in Berlin during the epidemic, as Shaun, Mario, Matteo, and Bende merged their varied musical heritages to form a formidable presence in alternative rock. The band fuses their eclectic backgrounds to craft a unique and energetic sound. The band's music is an engaging blend of progressive and hard rock, drawing inspiration from the diverse landscape of 1990s rock and bands such as Tool, Porcupine Tree, and Pearl Jam. Their new album, "Scarred By The Sound," signifies a pivotal moment in the band's journey, especially following their qualification for the SPH Masters live band finals in Germany in 2024.
The first track, Riot, opens the work with pace and energy. The vocals start immediately, and the guitars are super inspired (I love the riffs!). It's a perfect opening track, energetic and with a great rhythm section. The following track, I Can't Be Your Me, slows down a little. The vocals are more melodic, and the band does a great job supporting them with a tight performance (a great solo section in the song's second part).
Spin It starts with (again) great prog drums and explodes in a fantastic riff. This one is my favourite song on the EP, with a peculiar structure and amazing and different parts one after another, very difficult to describe with words. Devious is very 90s and catchy with a fantastic contrast between verses and chorus, with an entirely instrumental and very cool second part of the song (what a solo!). The Resurrection opens with a moody bass and low-gain verses mixed with high-octane parts. It reminds me of Pain of Salvation, same as the last track Echoes Of Laughter, a sort of outro.
I really enjoyed Scarred by The Sound, a quality work where the band doesn't follow any scheme and feels free from structures and genres. I totally recommend listening to it, I find every second of it very inspired, with a great sound and with a fantastic individual performance.
