Goddamn Wolves - The DOOM EP (2025)

Goddamn Wolves is an indie rock trio from Raleigh, North Carolina that merges classic alternative rock influences such as Pixies and New Pornographers with contemporary favorites like Bully and the Beths. The result is what The Big Takeover called "that perfect blend of an almost pop infectiousness and an underground rock sound.” Chris Weilding (guitar/vocals) and Laura McCullough (bass) provide the male/female vocal harmonies, supported by the rock-solid drumming and backing vocals of Drew Foglia.

This is their new work, called the DOOM EP which contains four songs that "reflect the dread uncertainty currently facing many Americans", says the band. It was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Max Gowan at Found After Dark in Raleigh, the band’s preferred studio for their recent releases.

The lead single and opener “We’re Doomed” is catchy and energetic. I love the drumming and the riffs. “It’s mostly a reminder to keep moving and try to make things better during our brief stay here. I hear it as a fairly positive message, actually.”, says the author. To my ears, it sounds like Oasis with a grunge sound (great combination, by the way).

Later Than You Think” is the second track written and sung by Laura: “Playing with Chris and Drew is so inspiring and freeing. This band is the perfect environment for coming up with ideas and feeling completely comfortable to try things and put myself out there.” The vocals are melodic and create a good contrast with the sound and the music, very robust. I love the rhythm section on this one.

Get Your Coat” is lighter and with a classy arrangement, sometimes country and very old style, with a piano in good evidence and a great solo section. It reminds me of some Guns N' Roses track from Use Your Illusions. The final track “So Long” has some R.E.M vibes and it's a very easy listening with good vocals by the 2 singers. I love the bridge of this one and the finale, getting more and more intense.

This is a quality EP, amazingly written and performed, with lots of variety, influences and inspiration, and a pleasure to listen to in its entirety. Make sure to follow Goddamn Wolves on social media and Spotify.
