Duncan McCartney has always been a sideman, a band member, and a hired gun for some of the best artists in Western Canada. Now, he has finally stepped out on his own with his debut single, "The Long Night."
Duncan commented: "This song was written during an intense period of personal growth; I was working hard to overcome some things and to change my mindset. I think that growth comes through in this song, as it lyrically evolves to become more optimistic and hopeful about the future. Musically, it was influenced by the '90s Seattle scene, and bands like Alice In Chains, Soundgarden, and Nirvana. I love those bands for their blend of heaviness and interesting musical colour, and tried to put my spin on that and to have the music reflect the lyrical journey."
I love the catchy riff at the song's beginning and the contrast between verses (filtered vocals) and the catchy (and grungy) open and anthemic chorus. The song brings me back to the 90s and reminds me of Scott Weiland in terms of vocal style. "The Long Night" is a very cool song, amazingly performed (check out the guitar solo!), arranged, catchy, and well produced as well.
