Excited about the Oasis comeback? Have you checked all the videos on the internet of the first dates of the tour? Even better, did you manage to get a ticket? Ok, whether you love them or hate them, you can’t deny that Oasis produced some of the greatest anthems of the past 30 years.
I'll try to do my top 10, trying to include different eras and stages, but, of course, with lots of excellent exclusions. Yes, including Wonderwall. Let's get started.
10. My Big Mouth (Be Here Now)
Oasis in a grunge version, second track of their third (and controversial, at least for me, album). If you replace Liam with Eddie Vedder, it's a 100% Pearl Jam song; you don't need to change anything. I always turn up the volume when I listen to this song, I think it's a good reason why it's on this top 10.
9. Little by Little (Heathen Chemistry)
My favourite songs from their 5th album. It was a good success at the time (including the campaign "Lidl by Lidl", from the famous supermarket), and it features a great performance behind the mic from Noel.
8. Lyla (Don't believe the truth)
I remember loving this song when it came out in 2005. The chorus was so catchy that I couldn't get it out of my head for a few months. Then it happened a few years later. Luckily, I stopped now (until next time).
7. Half the World Away (The Masterplan)
6. Where Did It All Go Wrong? (Standing on the shoulders of Giants)
I'm going through (and back and forth, and upside down) the Oasis catalogue, and I totally missed this one in the past. Where Did It All Go Wrong? is a fantastic song by Noel. Is it totally underrated, or do I love this one too much? Give it a go if you don't know it (Spotify link here).
5. Don’t Look Back in Anger (What's the Story Morning Glory?)
The sing-along to end all sing-alongs, immediate and catchy but also amazingly written, with tasty combinations of chords and little other things (like a very strange chord I dare you to find, no one plays it right). I've been playing this song for years, and it's always a success; people love it, and it always improves the mood of the night.
4. Live Forever (Definitely Maybe)
I think it's the first song I've heard of the band, back in the days, with the video in Heavy Rotation on MTV. "Hey, who are these guys with funny hair?" I still like it after more than 30 years, and it features killer vocals by Liam.
3. Stand By Me (Be Here Now)
I prefer the simplicity of the acoustic version (you can listen to it here) as the album version is a little too pompous (sounds more like Queen, in some parts), in my opinion. But, no matter what version you listen to, this is a fantastic song, amazingly written and catchy as well. Stand by meeeeeee.
2. Rock 'n' Roll Star (Definitely Maybe)
This one always puts me in a good mood, and it was the perfect start for my summer car trips, many, many years ago. I even put it in my personal top 10 of Happy songs (click if you are curious) and in my new Spotify playlist Road Trip (again, click here).
1. Champagne Supernova (What's the Story Morning Glory?)
Perhaps a little too long, but the chorus is so great and epic that we can forgive that. The sound is just perfect (just like the whole album, to be honest) and I love the dynamic. This is a fantastic song, and a great choice to close a fantastic album, their best, in my opinion. Enjoy.
