Jay Gavin - Rhythms And Rhymes

Jay Gavin has completed a full circle, going back to his roots in country, folk, and bluegrass after spending years travelling North America with punk and metal bands. Jay Gavin is the son of a PEI fisherman, and he spent his early years surrounded by pickers and singers. Jay Gavin has released three albums, most notably "Therapy" in 2022, which featured the popular music video "Got Myself a Harley." He is renowned for his genuineness, his hilarious, twangy melodies, and his foot-tapping live performances. With events planned for July 2023 in Atlantic Canada, Jay is now touring consistently in Western Canada, WA, MT, WY, and TN.

The first song off Jay's next album, "Rhythms and Rhymes," was produced, engineered, and mixed by Grammy-nominated Denny Knight of the Nashville Music Group (Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Conway Twitty, Billy Don Burns). Jay made the decision to look up Muhlenberg, Kentucky, on a map while he was driving from BC, Canada, to Nashville, Tennessee, where he would begin recording with Denny. Jay has always been a major fan of John Prine. One of Jay's most well-known covers is of the Prine song "Paradise," and he has always had a fondness for the locations where Prine spent his childhood summers.

After spending a day and night by the Rochester Dam along the Green River, he was so moved that when he came to the "abandoned old prison down at Airdrie Hill," he just had to compose a song about it! The next day, October 10, 2022, he recorded the song in The Den with Denny Knight and multi-instrumentalist Jeff Williams (June Carter Cash's Living Circle Band). It was John Prine's birthday. A few weeks later, Jay walked back up Airdrie Hill to record a video on his iPad. On April 7, 2023, the anniversary of Prine's demise, he is ready to release his song.

I really like the pace and the mood of "Rhythms and Rhymes," reminding me of early material by Johnny Cash. The song is very well performed, enjoyable from start to finish and with a spot-on arrangement. If you like the genre, you will like it for sure.
